Common Scents Inspections has been fully approved as a prospective Mold Help Approved Resource.  After a thorough investigation by our Mold Help Panel, we have fully concurred and approved this company as a valued resource to our consumers.
These are the following comments made by our prestigious Mold Help Evaluation Panel . . .
"Mr. Johnson is a fair, honest, and reputable professional whom I would highly recommend to our consumers with confidence."
"We have had some real concerns about the conduct of many so-called professionals, particularly in the Pacific Northwest and we feel very happy to have finally found one who meets our high standards."
"Mr. Johnson’s trained canine has an innate ability to detect mold problems where humans and machines could never compete with."
"His education, professional experience, training, and tools professional"
"It is very evident that Mr. Johnson's passion and enthusiasm towards perfection to excellence prevails in his work."
The reports produced by Common Scents Inspections are complete, extremely user-friendly, and very professional.  Mr. Johnson has notable experience, certifications, and training.
Additionally, Mr. Johnson brings many years of related and highly useful skills to the table.  They include:
    • Mr. Johnson received his BA from Concordia University in Portland, Oregon, and then started his own construction company, Dakota Homes about 12 years ago.  He also holds general contractors licenses in both Oregon and Washington, providing him with a very good insight into the causation and knowledge of moisture management issues, water damage detection, discovery of possible construction defect, and fungal growth in both new and older buildings.  Another pertinent issue that we noted is that due to Mr. Johnson?s education, professional experience, and obvious passion for his work, he appears to have high level of expertise into the methodology of cutting corners with other building contractors.  This could be a great asset for many people who reside in the Pacific Northwest since it appears to be an area with numerous building problems; mostly due to the methods that builders use to construct, wrap, and side buildings under very damp conditions.  Since Mold Help has such stringent criteria for our rating process, it is rare that we would select or rate four stars.  Part of our criteria for that four star rating is a minimum of five solid years of experience in their conducting mold inspections; although Johnson has 12 years in the construction industry and an accredited Bachelors Degree, he has three years
    • Mr. Johnson came to our attention before he encountered us.  Mold Help has a big presence in this location since or main office is in Salem, Oregon.  Our organization and partners hear many complaints from local residents.  Eric Johnson with Common Scents Inspections is the only indoor air quality professional that we would even consider awarding our Seal of Approval in this entire area.  Numerous victims who had actually been taken advantage of the indoor air quality so called professionals contacted us we complaints.  Mr. Johnson?s name came up repeatedly as their ?hero? who assisted them and went above and beyond.  Moreover, Mr. Johnson is a very honest and ethical professional.  The Mold Help panel of experts concurs that Mr. Johnson also charges a very reasonable price for his services and is someone you can trust.  He is the only professional in this entire area that we would recommend.
    • Mr. Johnson, a certified as a home inspector through A.I.I. (American Institute of Inspectors) is very ethical and does not appear to scam innocent clients.  His training required 40+ hours of home instruction combined with a full week of in class instruction and field work. The test was a comprehensive written exam as well as a full field test.

Common Scents Inspections is like a breath of fresh air, and we believe Mr. Johnson can literally ensure that.  It is very evident that Mr. Johnson?s passion and enthusiasm towards perfection to excellence exudes towards his profession and providing cost-effective, yet highly scientific results for his clients.  He demonstrates a sincere dedication towards his clients and as opposed to many of his competitors; he is dedicated to providing extremely effective solutions for his clients.
Mr. Johnson is also a certified Mold detection canine handler through both Florida Canine Academy and Falco K-9 Academy of California.  As Mold Help recently reported, we fully approve of the new technology with these highly trained canines who are highly trained in mold detection.  By saving time and money in the testing, prevention, and moisture management issues, certain canines can be extremely time and cost-effective in determining the cause of the problem.  Even the EPA has recently cited these highly trained mold detection dogs in obtaining effective results in little time.
Mr. Johnson is licensed, bonded and insured in both Oregon and Washington and the only reason he did not receive an excellent, although meeting and even exceeding our rigid criteria, is because he did not meet our five year minimum experience, however, he has been conducting mold investigations for three years.  However, Mold Help is finally proud and extremely at ease to recommend a true professional from every sense of the word, unlike others we have seen.  In this country, and others who put a credence on environmental issues and ethical organizations, we are proud to feature Eric and his team of dogs, tools, and scientific, monitored usage of every ethical manner to help our consumers.
Among Johnson’s arsenal of tools, please meet Jack and Zora. "One-Eyed" Jack is a five year old Jack Russell Terrier that is missing one of his eyes, hence the name "One-Eyed" Jack. Jack was rescued from a shelter in Florida and trained as one of the first mold detection dogs in the country. Jack proved to be such a valuable asset that Zora, a three year old yellow lab, was added to our business in the second quarter of '05. Zora comes to us from Southern California and was previously a bomb detection dog at Disneyland. The isolation at Disneyland was not suitable to Zora's personality. Odor is odor so it was a simple process for the experts at Falco K-9 Academy to quickly retrain her to find mold. While Jack and Zora are both working dogs they spend the bulk of their time as normal household pets. In fact, work time is really equivalent to play time. These beautiful animals are extremely well treated and have a wonderful life. Both even fly routinely in the cabin of commercial airliners as part of their duties. Jack and Zora have routine training schedules and are certified annually.
As we recommend and advocate, Mr. Johnson and his specially trained canines compliment each other in the most beneficial ways for the consumer.  Johnson conducts his investigations differently from most in that he uses scent detection dogs to locate potential hidden sources of mold. But the dogs are only one tool.
Mr. Johnson also uses a laser particle counter, moisture meter and a boroscope as follow up investigative tools. When he combines these essential and cost effective tools with his construction background and home inspection knowledge, he finds cost effective, yet highly scientific data to provide results.  This enables him to take site specific samples rather than random ones.
Additionally and unlike many unapproved inspectors that Mold Help would never consider, Johnson also takes viable mold samples which allow for a forensic analysis of the site as well as more specific species identification. The species identification is crucial when dealing with potential health concerns.  And unlike many so called mold professionals, Johnson adds any additional charges on to the sampling fees.  Some have been known to tack on lab fees, which they do not conduct, and inflate them.
In other words, Johnson only passes his same cost on what the lab charges. In this way he can, and often does, recommend that no sampling is necessary if not needed!  Some inspectors have been reported as taking numerous samples and overcharging what they pay in lab fees, therefore taking on more unnecessary prices.
Mr. Johnson finds the cause of the mold problem, moisture related issues, and gives his professional recommendations as to what needs to be done prior to and during remediation to assure that the problem is permanently corrected.  His reports are done extremely professionally, and he does not rely on any cookie cutter computer program to write his reports.  This enables accuracy, attention to detail, and moreover, the ability to read the report for the consumer, a remediation expert, physicians, and attorneys.  Unlike some so called professionals who shame this industry, Johnson also is very careful to explain the results of his reports and findings in user-friendly language.  In all actuality, the readability of the report is a key proponent in the inspection.  Our panel was very impressed with Johnson?s report and knowledge of testing methods.
We are 100% up front with our clients as to potential conflict of interests in regards to doing both testing as well as remediation. The reason that we began doing remediation was we saw a great need for quality companies that knew what they were doing and that were honest as well as effective. It does no one any good to clean up a mold problem that will only return a few months later.
Mr. Johnson has been in business since 1998, proudly serving Oregon and Washington.  Johnson also states that he would go just about anywhere, if necessary.
Mold Help has conducted an entire evaluation on Common Scents Inspections and after careful examination, has concurred that the companies listed in our profile meet or exceed our standards and have been fully approved.  In conducting each evaluation, Mold Help takes the following measures into consideration, among, a thorough background check, cost-effectiveness, sampling and report methodology, in-depth interview with one of our Mold Help panel of experts, critical analysis of final reports, assessment of moisture management tools, sampling techniques, education accreditations, experience, and customer feedback.
Mold Help is the only organization in the world who conducts unbiased, independent evaluations of professionals and products in the indoor air quality industry with honest answers.  We completely investigate, interview, test, check references, and conduct background checks for all Mold Help Evaluation Program applicants.  This code of conduct process has shown to be very effective in weeding out potential unethical, unqualified, and difficult so called ?professional.?  If a prospective Mold Help fails or refuses to abide by our protocol, they automatically fail.  Generally all of the above mentioned criteria scares away many people who Mold Help deems ?reprobates,? some candidates who are evaluated do not receive a desirable rating and opt out to be listed in our directory.  Mold Help has Non-Disclosure Agreements with every candidate, but the point is that you, the consumer, must be very careful who you hire to inspect your home.  Oregon and Washington have no regulations or requirements regarding mold inspectors.  You never know who you may be hiring, where their interests truly lie, what type of experience, education, or training that they do, or what type of reports they generate.
Mold Help always ensures quality without compromise and has fully concluded that this company is of great value and asset to our consumers, especially due to the alleged impropriety in this industry.  According to a recent MH Survey, 88.9% of all professionals of this demeanor are either ineffective, dishonest, or biased towards alleged ineffectual labs, or sell out to the party who has funding and sell out their results.  Environmental consulting is a non-governmental, unregulated industry, and most people are believed to be unqualified and even very dishonest.  If you pay for laboratory testing, home purchase inspections, moisture management issues, or visual assessments by a certified professional be extremely careful who you deal with.
We are proud to bring you our professional choice for Oregon and Washington:

The Mold Help panel of specialists has concurred that Common Scents Inspections is worthy of the Mold Help Seal of Approval. They have met our standards of excellence (unlike many others who we would never even recognize nor recommend) to further the progress in the Indoor Air Quality Industry as we feel that many so called IAQ Professionals can take advantage of you and take advantage of uneducated customers.

    Mold-Help Review
Although we find Eric Johnson to be an excellent choice for mold inspections and fully approve of his expertise, he receives a GOOD rating due to our stringent standards.  Mr. Johnson has three years of experience as a mold inspector, with twelve years in the construction industry.  In order to receive an EXCELLENT rating, one must have at least five solid years of experience in conducting inspections, along with other strict criteria.  We still believe Common Scents Inspections to be the best in this area so far.
